Dual Diagnosis

When mental health and substance use overlap, they are treated together, by one specialized team, in one integrated plan — because both deserve to be fully understood.

Illinois' Premier Behavioral Treatment Center

Clinically excellent. Anchored in compassion.

At Lake Harbor Behavioral Health, we believe everyone deserves the chance to feel steady, safe, and like themselves again. As the premier inpatient mental health facility serving Lake County and the greater Chicago area, we provide compassionate, comprehensive care for adults struggling with mental health disorders — with no requirement of a substance use history to receive treatment.

We approach mental health treatment from a trauma-informed perspective. Whether you're facing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or another mental health challenge, we believe the root cause driving your symptoms must be addressed for healing to last. Our physician-led team combines psychiatry, evidence-based therapy, and around-the-clock nursing support in a private, restorative environment.

From your first day, your care plan is built around you — stabilization when you need it most, daily individual and group therapy, medication management, and new coping skills that hold up after discharge. If substance use is part of the picture, our dual diagnosis program treats both conditions together, with one team and one integrated plan.

Questions, answered

What families ask us most.

If you don't see your question here, call us. A real person answers — day or night.

How much does treatment cost? +
Most patients use PPO insurance benefits, and many pay little or nothing out of pocket. We verify your coverage confidentially on your first call — it takes minutes.
Do I need a referral or a substance use history to be admitted? +
No. We treat primary mental health disorders — you don't need a history of substance use, and you don't need a referral to call. If a doctor or hospital has referred you, we'll coordinate with them directly.
How fast can I (or my loved one) get in? +
Often within 24 hours, sometimes same-day. Admissions is open 24/7/365, and we can help arrange transportation.
How long is a typical stay? +
Length of stay depends on your needs and your treatment plan. Most inpatient stays focus on stabilization first, then building the skills and support you need to transition home safely. Your care team reviews your plan with you throughout your stay.
Can my family be involved? +
Yes — with your consent, family education and structured communication are built into treatment.
Is everything confidential? +
Completely. Calls are private, admissions are discreet, and your information is protected by federal privacy law.
